BERKELEY, Calif. — September 12, 2026 — Blockcast today announces the availability of multicast-to-the-edge as part of its Edge Capacity Network. This feature provides content owners a way to reduce overall delivery costs while improving latency and the user experience. For network operators, this multicast affords them more efficient use of their available capacity without the capital requirements of specialized multicast equipment or CPE changes.

When thousands of viewers tune into the same live event, or users download the same software update, networks carry repeated copies of identical content across shared delivery paths. As these demands overlap, available capacity becomes the constraint. Multicast-to-the-edge reduces that duplication by moving shared content efficiently to edge nodes, where it can be delivered locally to end users.

Multicast has long offered a way to send content once and replicate it where delivery paths diverge. Historically, deploying it required tightly managed networks, specialized infrastructure, and coordination across the delivery chain. Those requirements limited its reach just as streaming audiences and other data-intensive workloads began placing greater pressure on internet capacity.

Blockcast brings those efficiencies to the open internet through software deployed on existing infrastructure. Its multicast-to-the-edge capability combines Automatic Multicast Tunneling (AMT) and TreeDN with Blockcast Edge RELAY nodes to carry shared traffic across a mix of multicast-enabled and unicast-only networks. This approach allows capacity providers to participate without waiting for every network along a delivery path to support native multicast.

“The industry has spent years building more capacity to deliver more copies of the same content,” said Omar Ramadan, CEO and Founder of Blockcast. “Multicast-to-the-edge gives us a way to make the capacity already in place work harder. Content owners can reduce duplicate delivery upstream, network operators can use their resources more efficiently, and users can receive content from closer to where they are.”

Blockcast Edge RELAY nodes provide the connection between shared distribution and local delivery. Deployed on existing hardware in ISP networks, campuses, venues, micro data centers, and other edge locations, these software nodes receive shared content and serve it downstream through familiar delivery methods. Multicast efficiency extends to the RELAY node while end users continue accessing content without changes to their devices or player software.

For content owners, this creates a way to reduce upstream delivery requirements and relieve pressure on constrained routes during periods of concentrated demand. Bringing content closer to users can also help reduce latency and maintain a more consistent experience when audiences converge on the same event.

For capacity providers, multicast-to-the-edge makes existing infrastructure more productive. Operators can reduce repeated traffic across shared network paths while contributing available edge resources to the Blockcast ECN. This creates an opportunity to support additional demand and monetize underutilized capacity without building a dedicated multicast infrastructure.

The capability supports workloads well beyond live video. Game releases, operating system updates, security patches, and AI model distribution all generate demand for identical content across large groups of users. By combining multicast distribution with edge caching and local delivery, Blockcast enables content owners to address that demand with fewer redundant transfers across shared upstream paths.

Multicast-to-the-edge extends the delivery architectures and CDN relationships content owners already use. Through the ECN, providers can combine multicast, unicast, caching, and other delivery methods according to the workload and available infrastructure, adding capacity where it can have the greatest impact.

About Blockcast

Blockcast is the world’s first programmable edge capacity network. The Blockcast Edge Capacity Network unlocks underutilized capacity across ISPs, micro data centers, campus networks, broadcasters, satellite operators, decentralized infrastructure, and commercial CDNs, making it available where and when digital experiences need it. By combining heterogeneous delivery models, multicast, Edge RELAY nodes, and AI-assisted allocation, Blockcast helps content providers extend existing CDN architectures, reduce peak-event pressure and operational complexity, and deliver closer to users.
